I disagree with your statement that you must know the ending before you start or otherwise you will just chug along and not have a good ending. That’s not how I write. I write a story as I go and in doing so I suprise myself and the reader. Otherwise, the ending is often predictable or boring

The most important thing to remember when discussing intricate story structure is to keep it subtle. I think when you begin a story, start it stupid. It should be a crazy amalgamation of cliche and then, as you sharply pointed out, and then you work from there. I WAY concur with your sharp assertion that the ending should be unearthed first and then everything before will follow. The best writers are the most manipulative.
