A soldier is a good idea.  Perhaps have him injured and lost, then finding his way back to his regiment again.

What about a soldier&#039;s wife, waiting for him at home?  His letters could have stopped coming, and she waits in vain - until he either comes home, injured, or she gets a visit from a comrade to tell her he&#039;s been killed.

The story of a little drummer boy who saves the day (in a small way, but still important!).
