Hi, I would like to get a book of short-stories published (12 or so) How would I go about doing that? Should I get an agent or just send my work in to a publisher?
Before any reputable publisher will be interested in a book of your stories, you’ll have to establish a track record by publishing individual stories in various magazines. The book "Writer’s Market" (your local library might have a copy) is one good source for information about journals that publish short stories. This website is another source:

Make sure your stories are the best they can be and send ‘em in to the publishers.
Good luck…

There are three common types of book publishers: two of them have respectable reputations; one of them is notorious for publishing low-quality results. To best understand your three options, I recommend reading this online article: http://bookpublishing.suite101.com/article.cfm/how_to_publish_a_book_in_canada
This article focuses on the Canadian marketplace, but the information could be easily applied to the American marketplace as well. We’re both pretty much the same. Reading the above article will help you to pick the best publisher for you.
