How do you go about getting a short story published?

I have a completed short story, and I was wondering where I might go to see about having it published in a magazine or collection of stories.
The story is horror, with occult overtones. Similar to Cosmic Horror, only a bit more down to Earth.

Duotrope

This website has a database of magazines that accept short stories. You can search for those that accept a particular genre of stories, print or online format, paid or not, etc.

Even though they list submission guidelines, be sure to visit the individual magazine sites (linkable from duotrope( in case the guidelines have changed.

Short stories are best marketed to magazines and anthologies, and there are magazines and story collections that are genre specific (horror, sci-fi, high fantasy, etc(

You would most probably find a book of magazine markets and write to the editor.

Hey there, I am trying to publish two books, and let me tell you it is tedium. With a short story it may be a bit easier, if you can get it published in a collection or magazine. I had to get an editor, then an agent who is trying to sell my stuff to publishers, that might be the route you have to take. Good Luck with everything!
