How do I write a short story without narrating?

My professor told us to write a short story but do not write in narrative form… Would it then be a thesis statement?

What they mean is don’t write like this:

When I was younger, I had a dog. Ben was a lovely dog. He skipped through the meadows…

Write like this:
‘Come, on boy!’ I called to Ben. He bounded up to me.
