I’m looking to bring out a short story collection. I have ten stores that have already been published, and ten that I’ve written specifically for this collection. I’m not sure how many reprints to include (obviously I’ve already checked the previous contracts and rights, so they’d be no problem reprinting some of the stories in a new collection).
Also how many stories would you expect to see?

I don’t know if there’s any rule as to the ratio of new and old stories. Some short story collections have a list at the front, saying, "[name of story] first appeared in [magazine]" or "[name of story] reprinted by permission of [company]", so you can assume those are old ones, and any story that’s not in the list must be new.

How many stories I’d expect would depend on the length of each one. I’d expect to pay about as much for a short story collection as I would for a novel, which would mean the collection overall would be about the same length as a novel – 40,000 words or more.

How do you quote from from a literature book? The short story is in a literature book, however the author of the story is not the author of the literature book. For example, the author of the literature is X.J Kennedy, but I am quoting a paragraph from another author who wrote the short story. Do you quote the actual author who wrote the short story or the author from the literature book?

You would just quote the author of the story. For example, I have a literature book for my English class that has a bunch of different poems, plays and short stories in it all of them obviously by different authors, where as the lit book has the name of two authors on the front. In actuality, those two authors on the front of my lit book are the editors for the lit book. If you were writing a works cited page you would want to include the name of the editor for the lit book as well as the author of the story you are citing.

Because I already came up with a synopsis for a story i wanted to do but i only have 3 characters and i’m gonna need more than 3 characters.

I already have descriptions for the characters i have now and what they want but i just need help coming up with the storyline so how can i come up with a GREAT story plot for the synopsis?

From Michael Hauge, who had a more detailed version online at on point, comes the basic structure which can be applied to nearly every screenplay. Flesh out what you have until you can write at least one long and detailed paragraph for each step. That’s your starting point.

01STAGE I: SETUP (0-10%)
02TURNING POINT 1: THE OPPORTUNITY (at 10%)
03STAGE II: THE NEW SITUATION (10-25%)
04TURNING POINT 2: THE CHANGE OF PLANS (25%)
05STAGE III: PROGRESS (25-50%)
06TURNING POINT 3: THE POINT OF NO RETURN (50%)
07STAGE IV: COMPLICATIONS AND HIGHER STAKES (50-75%)
08TURNING POINT 4: THE MAJOR SETBACK (75%)
09STAGE V: THE FINAL PUSH (75-90/99%)
10TURNING POINT 5: THE CLIMAX (90 – 99%)
11STAGE VI: THE AFTERMATH

The Scribner Anthology of Contemporary Short Fiction. We used it for a class and every story was gloomy.

So I have the text "Rappaccini’s Daughter" by Nathaniel Hawethorne to cite in my composition. Problem is that my teacher emailed the story to us, so it is not included in a collection or anything nd I have no clue where he got the text. How do I cite a short story that is not in a collection in MLA format?

There’s an excellent website called easybib (easybib.com). It allows you to create citations for free in MLA format. You’ll go to that cite, click on the type of resource (in this case web) and highlight your teacher’s link and paste it in the appropriate box. When you press the button that says cite this, it will do it for you. easy peasy.
