Toy Story 2 – 1/10

Posted by admin on May 12th, 2010 and filed under stories | 25 Comments »

Woody prepares to go to summer camp with Andy for the weekend, but Andy rips his arm by accident while playing with his toys before leaving, forcing him to be placed on a shelf and stay behind. There he discovers that Andy’s mother is having a yard sale, to where she takes a fellow shelved toy, Wheezy, an old rubber penguin with a broken squeaker, to be sold. Woody sneaks down to the yard sale with the help of Andy’s pet dog Buster and saves Wheezy, but is accidentally left outside and found by an enthusiastic toy collector, who ends up stealing him when Andy’s mother refuses to sell him. Buzz chases after the collector’s car as he drives away, but quickly loses him. During an investigation back at Andy’s room, Buzz and the other toys quickly determine that the thief is Al McWhiggin, owner of the toy company Al’s Toy Barn. Buzz recruits Mr. Potato Head, Rex, Hamm, and Slinky Dog to go out and save Woody.

In Al’s apartment, Woody discovers that he is a valuable collectable based on Woody’s Roundup, a popular children’s TV show from the 1950s, and meets three other toys from the franchise: Jessie, his yodeling cowgirl sidekick; Bullseye, his trusted horse companion; and Stinky Pete the Prospector, who is in mint condition inside his unopened box. With Woody’s inclusion and his collection complete, Al plans to sell his Woody’s Roundup merchandise to a toy museum to Tokyo, Japan. The three other toys are excited about the trip, but Woody, still being Andy’s toy, wishes to return home and makes several failed attempts at escaping the apartment, though putting himself at odds with Jessie, who fears going back to storage. After his arm is fixed by a toy repairman, Woody learns that Jessie was once a toy beloved by a girl named Emily, but was put away and forgotten as Emily grew up. Stinky Pete tells Woody that Andy will also throw him away when he grows up. Woody warms up to the idea of being forever adored by children in the museum and decides to stay.

Meanwhile, Buzz and the other toys reach the local Al’s Toy Barn store across the street from Al’s apartment. Shortly after splitting up with the other toys, Buzz encounters a newer Buzz Lightyear action figure who (like the original Buzz from the first film) believes himself to be a real space ranger. The two Buzzes fight, but Buzz #2 overpowers Buzz #1 and ends up being mistakenly taken by the others in their search for Woody. Buzz #1 chases after the team, inadvertently letting loose an action figure of Emperor Zurg, Buzz’s arch-nemesis, who sets out to destroy him. Buzz catches up with the others as they find Woody and attempt to take him back home, but Woody refuses to go. Buzz reminds him that toys are meant to be played with by children. Woody returns to his senses and convinces Jessie and Bullseye to come with him to become Andy’s toys, but Stinky Pete, seeing the museum trip as his only chance to become immortal since he was never sold, breaks out of his box and separates Woody, Jessie, and Bullseye from the others.

As Al packs up Woody with the rest of the merchandise and drives off to the airport to ship them, Buzz #1 and the team hijack a Pizza Planet delivery truck while Buzz #2 remains behind to keep Emperor Zurg occupied. In the baggage-handling area of the airport, Stinky Pete faces off against Buzz and Woody, ripping Woody’s arm again in the process, but is distracted by the other toys and stuffed in a little girl’s backpack to be taken in and played with. Jessie ends up being boarded on the airplane for Japan, but Woody, Buzz, and Bullseye manage to save her just before the plane lifts off. The toys return home just before Andy comes back from camp and fixes Woody’s arm. The toys also learn that Al’s business and mood have sharply declined due to his failure to sell the merchandise. As the new toys settle down with their status as Andy’s toys, Woody and Buzz accept the fact that Andy will eventually grow up, but they will still have each other.

I like to make up stories in my head. And I want to write a book about them. How can I do this?

Posted by admin on May 11th, 2010 and filed under stories | 4 Comments »

I’m always making up stories in my head about what I want to happen in my life. I really want to write a book on them.
But I don’t know where to start.
For example, I imagine myself living in a nice cozy apartment with my boyfriend. We’ll be snuggling next to a warm fire. And just talking about our future together.
How can I write stuff like this on paper?
Any ideas or tips?

Major Components of Stories

Plot is the organization of events that will take place in the story.
Characters are the people or animals who will be in the story.
Setting is the physical time and place in which the story takes place.
Dialogue is the spoken words of the characters in the story.
Point of view is the relative identification of the narrator with the characters.
Theme is the main idea or meaning behind a story.
Style is the writer’s use of the language.

Other tips

Be specific in your writing. The more specific the detail, the more real the story will seem to the reader.

The best fiction can come from the preposterous imaginations of writers who are good storytellers.

Becoming a skilled typist (on a word processor) is extremely useful to a writer.

Very few people make a living at writing fiction.

Revision is important. A writer can always do one more revision. At some point the writer has to stop revising and get the work published.

Show, don’t tell.

Avoid starting a story with dialogue.

Don’t use cliches.

The more detail in the story, the more interesting the story.

Revise, revise, revise, revise, . . .

Avoid author intrusion.

Write what you like to read.

Don’t use exclamation points.

Use surprise and irony.

The shorter the story, the more important each word becomes.

Descriptions and technical details must be authentic; when the reader suddenly realizes that the writer made a mistake, the reader is jarred out his or her temporary acceptance of the story as reality, i.e., author intrusion.

Avoid overused words.

Success breeds success. The more published you are, the easier it is to get published again.

Every word can be used appropriately somewhere in some story.

Don’t tell what happened; recreate what happened.

The beginning of a story must be interesting. Readers can be lost on page one.

Scorning the work of a writer does not make that writer a better writer.

Hope this helps, and good luck!!!

Christian The Lion – the full story in HQ with Sigur Ros soundtrack

Christian left the Kora Reserve in 1973. He made his new territory along the Tana river, but when the Wakamba herdsmen kept bringing their livestock to his hunting ground, he moved on. George Adamson said in his autobiography, “I used to count the days on which we hadn’t seen Christian, but when they reached 97, I gave up recording them in my diary.” Because a lion can live from 12 to 15 years in the wild, Adamson believed that Christian ended his days in the Meru National Reserve only a few miles up river.

How many stories can you fall without dying?

Posted by admin on April 20th, 2010 and filed under stories | 23 Comments »

If I didn’t go through any lengths to protect myself, how many stories could I fall without dying? Basically, how many stories would it take for me to die if I jumped? Hypothetically, of course.

It depends on the conditions: You can die from a 5 foot fall. Seen it happen. Severe head trauma.

On the other hand, there have been 3 confirmed "landings" from over 10,000 feet and the people survived.

I recall on was a WWII gent in Germany, and English gent whose plane was aflame, and parachute was gone jumped from a plane at about 15,100 feet. He landed on a snow drift that had blown in from under some pine saplings. He survived, but with severe burns and 2 broken legs and pelvis.

Usually, the trauma sustained from a fall over 30 feet or so is NOT survivable. Remember, for every second and foot you fall, you pick up speed due to momentum and gravity……After 1000 feet, you’re going to hit the ground at about 269 miles per hour. OUCH……….

Christopher K.

EDIT: I live above the beach on a 90 foot cliff: The last 3 folks that tumbled down the cliff did NOT survive. And that’s only 90 feet and NOT "freefalling"………
