How to format short story that jumps from past to present in storyline?

Posted by admin on November 12th, 2010 and filed under short story | 1 Comment »

In a short story I’m writing, I jump from present time to past in the storyline. Is it fine that I separate these events with stars ( *** ) between paragraphs or is there another way to do this?

In the past, I have used the asterisks/stars, but another option is saying something like "on another track" or something similar to that. I always thought that was an interesting way to connect different parts of a story.

How can I properly plan out a short story?

Posted by admin on November 1st, 2010 and filed under short story | 5 Comments »

I just recently asked a question concerning my writer’s block, and someone gave me the very advantageous advice to write a short story before continuing my novel to "gain a sense of accomplishment"…I know what I would like to write about, I am just having trouble planning it out properly. Help?

develop the characters and think of possible situations in which you can place them in. Think of a conflict and how your character would react in certain situations. Just keep thinking of possibilities. Imagine what would happen if you put all your characters in one room. What would the clash result in? Would they get along or would problems occur? There are many things you can do but just keep thinking

When is a short story considered literature?

Posted by admin on October 13th, 2010 and filed under short story | 4 Comments »

I am taking a fiction writing course in college. On the syllabus it says "Please note that this workshop is focused on literary fiction. That means that we will neither read nor write in popular genres such as romance, western, science-fiction, or fantasy."

Okay, so does this mean that it is impossible for a "western" work to be considered literature? Same with the others. I have to write a short story and I started writing one set in the Old West. When is a short story considered literature?

Some writing programs and professors are pretentious like this.

When I was looking and English Lit and Creative Writing graduate programs, I interviewed with many professors who had this narrow mindset and limited view of literature. In fact, I walked out on one professor at UT (and cost myself any shot at getting in the graduate program) when he said that Tolkien was just an over-hyped children’s story and was not considered valid as literature and no one could ever convince him otherwise. I said something like "Really? I’m amazed you could read it and say that." And he replied that he never read it because it was and over-hyped children’s story. So I got up right then and left in the middle of the interview knowing that wasn’t the place for me.

Basically literary fiction is just code for "realism." It is a good skill to work on regardless of the genre you want to write in, but what it really means is probably that that is what your teacher reads and writes and they aren’t willing to go outside their own comfort zone.

What is the longest type of short story, but too short to be a novel?

Posted by admin on October 10th, 2010 and filed under short story | 8 Comments »

I want to write a short story, but the idea is too short for a novel, but I want it to be pretty long. Isn’t called a memoir or something? To make it pretty decent, I’d need around 30-50 pages.

i think it’s called a novella… "little novel"

How many short stories are generally in a short story collection/anthology?

Posted by admin on October 7th, 2010 and filed under short story | 3 Comments »

I am a writer currently writing a short story collection (for my own enjoyment and the enjoyment of my friends, so I’m not worrying about publishing at this time). I was just wondering how many short stories were generally in one of those. Like minimum to maximum? Or do they count it based on word count? Thanks in advance for any help.

I’d say a minimum of ten stories, and a maximum of 40.

I run a small indy press, and we do alot of anthos. The smallest one I ever did was ten stories; the largest, 41, which practically killed our production department. So, now I’m trying to stick to a max of 21.

Hope this helps.

BTW, our stories range from 2000 to 4000 words.

I do not claim to own, any audio used in this video, which is made only for entertainment purposes.

My first short story;

I chose not to give the boy character a name, just for the heck of it.

And the reason she does what she does, is because she realizes that he is what he is, and she’s too shallow to understand that love overcomes all.
