How to begin writing a short story in about 2000 words?

Posted by admin on April 30th, 2010 and filed under short story | 1 Comment »

I’ve participated in Scholastic writing competition and I’ve to write a short story in about 2000 words. But I don’t know where to begin from.It has to be original, not a copied one. Please help me.I need the answer immediately as I’ve to submit the story tomorrow.

Sounds like you’re screwed. If you have to submit it tomorrow and you haven’t even started and don’t even have an idea, then you may give up. It’s not going to be good enough quality even if you do get 2000 wordsdown. Other entrants will have written theirs over the course of over a week at least and will have been putting finishing touches on it for weeks more.

Next time, be more prepared, that’s all I can say I’m afraid

JOHN TURTURRO reads a short story by Italo Calvino

In this exclusive animated short, John Turturro reads Italo Calvino’s short fairy tale, “The False Grandmother.” A bit like “Little Red Riding Hood,” this story ends in a sinister mood that Turturro brilliantly evokes and animator Kevin Ruelle carries. Is the Metamorphosis a novella or a short story?

Posted by admin on April 28th, 2010 and filed under short story | 1 Comment »

I have to write an essay about The Metamorphosis Monday, but I have no idea whether this is considered a short story or a novella. In other words, do I need to italicize the title or put it inside of quotation marks if I mention it in the essay? Thanks for any help!

What grade ar you in.. cause im having the same problem. Im in 8th grade.

What is the name and author of this short story?

Posted by admin on April 26th, 2010 and filed under short story | 3 Comments »

When I was in college, I read a short story about a little town where everything SEEMS to be perfect. No unemployment. No crime. Everyone SEEMS to be happy. However, the happiness comes at a cost. One child is kept in a dungeon like setting, beaten, basically tortured for their entire life. All of the other children in the town are kept ignorant of the misery of the imprisoned child until their eighteenth birthday, when they are brought to see the tortured child and given the choice of remaining in the community and helping to continue the misery of the child or leaving. I remember the title of the story was an anagram of either "anywhere" or "nowhere", but it is NOT the story "Erehwon". I believe this story was in a Norton’s Anthology of Literature books, but I can’t remember which one. I believe the story was only about ten pages long. Any help you can give me will be appreciated!

"The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas" by Ursula LeGuin
"This poignant story forces the reader to decide if the happiness of the many is worth the suffering of one. In the end, however, those who choose to leave do so because, I imagine, the happiness of others is eliminated from the equation. It then becomes a question of whether or not that particular individual’s happiness is worth this poor child’s suffering – at least, that is why I would leave Omelas! "

What’s the anagram? Salome? Maleos? Malosa?
