I need some really good short stories that have deeper meaning/provoke thought. They should be less than about 15 pages. THe less the better. I am compiling a book of short stories, and I already have a lot of scary/creepy ones, so preferably not those types, although if that’s all you can think of then that’s fine
Though I may seem old-fashioned, I like Karel Čapek’s Tales from Two Pockets. Here’s one of them that I have managed to find in Enlish online:

Buy if you find a complete collection you will enjoy them all (I’m almost sure). They are not just ordinary short stories, each of them has some background, or subtle meaning, or some irony, or unexpectedness. And besides, Čapek was a person who 1) loved nature (was a great expert in cacti); 2) invented the word "robot" (together with his brother); 3) some years before Titanic sank he had written a story that described something of the kind (not the very best of his stories, but it’s just an interesting thing to be mentioned).
Hey, I’m currently in 9th grade and I was just wondering when I will have to start writing short stories. Creative writing is one of my passions so I feel that it will be fun and easy once I need to start.
I know it’s usually different for each school, but if you could just give me a rough estimate, then that will be appreciated!
I remember I was in 11th grade when we did a full-on short story project.
do you find short stories which includes love, fantasy, war, sadness…..interesting? What=great for you?
For short stories, I like a really interesting main character at the center of a mysterious plot. The character has to be interesting, and what I find interesting is a character that may have made bad choices in the past, betrayed a lot of people to save themself, etc etc. I like a character that is almost supernatural, like has amazing agility and weapons mastery kind of thing (I love fantasy!!) Also, the character has to be one that is a bit obnoxious; like one you love but hate.
For the plot, it has to be all very fast paced, like the character is trying to escape something, or there’s something he’s not telling you. A good short story has a lot of tension that just keeps you reading until the end. Also, if the character is on edge, it puts you on edge, and I think that pulls me in to a story. There also has to be a mystery about something; either the character’s past, a secret that could destroy the world, etc etc. A lot of tension, action, and mystery definately keep me hooked in.
Finally, I LOVE a good cliffhanger at the end of a short story. Because short stories have to be, well, short, a cliff hanger is an ideal tool to use. It keeps the reader begging for more, and adds that air of mystery and secrecy if you trying to build that tension throughout the story. Cliffhangers are great for short stories, so in all of mine I use them!! I love thinking of twists in my story, then BAM! Done. I think it really adds a lot to the overall story, and makes it more interesting.
