How do you keep short stories short?

Posted by admin on March 11th, 2010 and filed under short stories | 4 Comments »

I love to write, but my stories are always very very long. Its only a hobby of mine, but I would love to be able so finish one every once in awhile. I have all these ideas but can’t ever seem to finish one.

So how to you tell the story throughly but keep it from turning into a novel?

And about how many pages should the average short story be?

Short stories don’t have to be short. They’re just not as long as your average novel, which I would say would be between 25,000 to 50,000 words.

So don’t worry about length. My last short story was 16 pages double-spaced, and it was pretty condensed. I’m not sure how long yours usually are, but just write until the story’s told. The trick is to keep at it!

If you think your short story ideas are too long, you could always try just stretching them into novels. Nothing wrong with that. ;)

what are some short stories portraying the role of children?

Posted by admin on March 5th, 2010 and filed under short stories | 1 Comment »

I need to write my paper on the role of children in short stories. All i have is my college textbook of short stories. The stories can be from any country and i need some where children play the role of protagonist, antagonist, and support character.

L Frank Baum wrote a lot of short stories about OZ as well as the original novel – most have children playing the main roles – examples Little Wizard Stories of Oz, and Queer Visitors from the Marvelous Land of Oz.

Many of his other short stories are also child based

How long does a book of short stories and poems have to be?

I’m thinking of putting together a book of short stories and poems i’ve written and I wanted to know how long it should be so that it is elligable to be published.

Contact publishers or an agency for those answers. Again, it just depends upon how big you want the book?

You have to have manuscripts, then submit them. Always expect rejections at first. It happens to everyone. Don’t give up, keep trying. If you have an agent, let him do that talking for you.

What are some really good short stories?

Posted by admin on February 27th, 2010 and filed under short stories | 2 Comments »

I need some really good short stories that have deeper meaning/provoke thought. They should be less than about 15 pages. THe less the better. I am compiling a book of short stories, and I already have a lot of scary/creepy ones, so preferably not those types, although if that’s all you can think of then that’s fine

Do you have these two? They’re really short, and they’re classics.

‘Sole Solution’ by Eric Frank Russell (3 pages) — just read it, there’s no way to do it justice with a summary. Incredibly thought provoking for anyone.

‘Answer’ by Fredric Brown (1/2 page) — google it. It’s so short, it’s all over the net.

If I remember any other thought-provokers, I’ll update you.

What are your favorite contemporary short stories?

I have been reading the Scribner Anthology and The Shell Collector, both of which are collections of short stories. I am trying to collect some more ideas for reading material so what is your favorite short story?

"In the Cemetery where Al Jolson is Buried" by Amy Hempel. She’s a good author.

Also, look into Stephen King short stories, like his collection Just After Sunset. His short stories are a lot different than his novels (aka. his idea isn’t always to scare you, but to make you think).
